Chan Kiu worked as a photojournalist for more than 30 years, during which he witnessed many of Hong Kong’s most significant events and defining moments. His lens captured everything from heart-stopping natural disasters and the somber realities of refugee influxes to captivating urban scenes and intimate glimpses of daily life. These powerful images transport us back to the 1960s through the 1990s. Though time flows like a river with no return, Chan Kiu’s photographs preserve the historical imprints of the past, offering us a vivid window into old Hong Kong.
陳橋先生在香港從事攝影記者超過三十年,期間見證香港多宗新聞大事,目睹多個重要時刻,既有驚心動魄嘅天災,無限欷歔嘅大逃亡潮,亦有真情流露嘅小故事同溫情洋溢嘅生活寫照。呢啲似曾相識嘅情景,都係陳橋自上世紀六十至九十年代拍攝嘅作品。時光唔會倒流,呢啲被陳橋拍低嘅珍貴照片,充分展現出當時香港嘅面貌,成為時代歷史嘅印記。
About Chan Kiu
Chan Kiu was born in Hong Kong in 1927. He began his career as a junior photojournalist at the Hong Kong Tiger Standard (now known as The Standard) and rose through the ranks to become Chief Photographer at the South China Morning Post. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he earned numerous internationally acclaimed awards. In 1985, he was awarded the Queen’s Badge of Honour, becoming the first photojournalist in Hong Kong’s news industry to receive this distinction.
Chan retired from the South China Morning Post in 1987, then worked briefly for the Window Magazine before immigrating to Vancouver in 1993. He held solo photojournalism exhibitions in Hong Kong, Vancouver, and Toronto. His published works include Chan Kiu Times 20: A Picture Documentary (1980) and Kiu Chan Times 30: Moments Captured by a Photojournalist (2006). He actively participated in local Chinese community services and promoted Taichi and qigong activities. Chan Kiu passed away peacefully in Vancouver in 2024 at the age of 96.

陳橋1927年出生於香港,自1956年起先後擔任香港《英文虎報》及《南華早報》攝影記者及至首席攝影主任,在其三十多年的攝影生涯中,他的攝影作品曾獲多項世界新聞圖片獎項。他於1985年獲頒授英女皇榮譽獎章,成為香港首位從事新聞攝影行業的得獎人。
陳橋於1987年從南華早報退休,及後短暫在香港Windows 雜誌工作,並於1993年移居溫哥華。 他曾多次在香港、溫哥華及多倫多舉辦新聞攝影個人展覽,又在1980年及2006年出版個人新聞攝影集:《陳橋新聞從影廿年》與《鏡頭下的歷史:陳橋三十載新聞圖片錄》。 他也積極參予本地華人社區服務,推廣健身的太極氣功活動。他於2024年在溫哥華安詳離世,享年96歲。
